Use Canva's AI to Build Professional PD Slides
What This Does
Canva's AI features transform a plain text session outline into a designed slide deck — with layouts, icons, and visual hierarchy already handled. For instructional coaches who run PD regularly, it cuts slide-building time from 90 minutes to under 20.
Before You Start
- You have a free Canva account (canva.com — free is sufficient)
- You have a PD session outline (even rough bullet points work)
- You're logged into Canva in your browser
Steps
1. Open a New Presentation
- Go to canva.com and click Create a design in the top right
- Search for "Presentation" in the search bar and select it
- You'll land on a blank slide editor with a panel of templates on the left
What you should see: A blank slide editor with a left panel showing design templates.
2. Use Magic Design to Generate a Starting Deck
- In the left panel, click Templates
- In the template search bar, type your PD topic (e.g., "professional development education")
- Hover over any template and click Customize this template
- Alternatively: click the Apps icon (grid of squares) in the left sidebar, search Magic Design, and follow the on-screen prompts to describe your presentation
What you should see: A multi-slide deck using your chosen template, with placeholder text to replace.
3. Use Magic Write to Fill in Slide Content
- Click on any text box you want to replace with AI-generated content
- Look for the Magic Write button (sparkle icon) that appears in the text toolbar
- Type a description of what you want on that slide: "Key takeaway about formative assessment for teachers"
- Click Generate — Canva writes slide text for you
What you should see: Text appears in the text box that matches your description. Troubleshooting: If Magic Write isn't visible, you may need to click directly inside a text box first before the toolbar appears.
4. Replace Placeholder Content with Your Session Material
- Click each placeholder text box and type or paste your actual session content
- For images, click Elements in the left panel and search for education-related visuals
- Use the Color palette tool (in the top bar) to match your school or district brand colors
5. Download and Present
- When done, click the Share button (top right)
- Click Download → select PDF Standard for printing or PNG for screen display
- Or click Present directly in Canva to present from the browser
Real Example
Scenario: You're building a 45-minute PD on structured literacy for K-2 teachers. You have a session outline in a Google Doc.
What you do: Create a new Canva presentation → apply an education template → paste your outline into Magic Write slide-by-slide → adjust colors to your school palette → download as PDF.
What you get: A polished 12-slide deck with consistent fonts, section headers, callout boxes, and visual elements — in about 15 minutes instead of 90.
Tips
- Keep one Canva template as your "PD brand" so all your sessions look consistent — teachers will recognize your style over time.
- Use Magic Write for discussion questions and reflection prompts — it writes these quickly and they're easy to customize.
- Canva's free version has everything you need for PD slides. The paid Pro tier adds more stock photos and brand kit features, but isn't necessary.
